After some inconsistent meals on our last trip to New Orleans, we ended our trip on a perfect note with brunch at La Petite Grocery. Continuing with the theme of this current trip, we had never been to La Petite Grocery though I feel like we have “almost” gone there several times in the past.
To start, I ordered a side of the “blistered peppers” which were a mound of shishitos with a ton of grada padano on top. I don’t know if I have ever been served so many shishitos in a restaurant order in the past, let alone a side order, but they were very tasty and probably would have been fine with a much smaller amount of cheese as well.
Andy also ordered the blue crab beignets to start, which in a break from my vegetarianism (I sometimes eat crab once a year or so), I tried and have to admit were totally amazing. Not “crabby” or fishy at all, really cheesy and a good amount of salt, smooth cheese flavor and sweet. Heck, the next time we go there, I may even order a full appetizer for myself (sorry to my 99% vegetarian self).
My main course was also quickly and happily consumed - though I’ll be honest that I was already full by the time it got by the table. I ordered the daily buttermilk waffle, which was a chocolate waffle with caramel sauce, candied kumquats and almond slices. The waffle may have been the best I have ever had - just completely out-of-this-world. All of the flavors blended together so well that I couldn’t believe this was just a daily waffle special and not a restaurant standby refined after years and years of practice. I can almost taste it now, over a month later!
Our meal was also followed by an unexpected neighborhood Mardi Gras parade one block away. All in all, can’t wait for our next New Orleans trip!
